2.5 Minute Presentations for Instructor Defined Challenge

2.5 minutes is enough time to convey what your concept does and how it can help the customer. But you have to be focused and create strong visual aids. All presentations will be done in PowerPoint. They should contain:

    • Title/Name of Product

    • Annotated figure of product. Annotations are text that accompany a figure; see example of effective use of annotations: Cheetah Prosthesis.

    • Figures can be hand drawn, CAD models, or photos of mockups. See example of a panel of a Storyboard drawn by an MAE student.

    • Explain how the product works early in the presentation (otherwise the users will be lost). You can use step-by-step slides, or a short video. Do NOT rely on holding up a physical prototype, since it will be hard for the whole audience to see.

    • Describe who will pay for the product, and target price point.

    • Describe the pros and cons of your product. It is best if you raise the cons and explain how you will address them, rather than leave them unaddressed in the mind of the audience.

      • For the Cell Phone on a Plane Challenge make sure to address the product use from the perspective of the cell phone users adjacent passengers, flight attendants, and airlines.

Preparation

    • Dry runs are essential for this type of pitch. Every student must pair up (or meet in larger groups) and performed timed dry runs.

    • Text in slides should be short bullet points, since you can fill in the rest orally.

    • Every slide should have a figure (even if it is a small one)
